Iso 9001 in the Manufacture of Drums

When an industrial packaging supplier says it is ISO 9001-certified, the real question is: what difference does that make to me? At Joaquín Alberto, we have held this active certification for years, and in this article we explain what it means in practice – not just on paper.
What is ISO 9001 certification and what does it guarantee?
ISO 9001 is the international standard that sets out the requirements for a quality management system. It does not certify that a product is of good quality; rather, it certifies that the company has the necessary processes, controls and traceability to manufacture consistently, batch after batch.
A certified company documents its working practices, sets out who is responsible for what, and measures its performance using concrete indicators. It does so under external audit: annual reviews and recertification every three years.
Why do we keep it active at Joaquín Alberto?
We manufacture drums for sectors where the margin for error is very small: the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. In these environments, a batch with dimensional variations, a seal that does not close properly or a raw material that is out of specification is not an internal quality issue; it is a problem for the customer’s end product.
That is why we apply the quality management system to every production line: from open-head drums to open-head metal-based drums and those designed for wire drawing. In practice, this means:
- Inspection of raw materials on arrival at the factory, before they enter production.
- Batch traceability: every order can be traced from manufacture through to delivery.
- Documented procedures for managing incidents, so that they do not depend on who is on site that day.
If you need traceability documentation for an internal audit, you can request it directly from us.
ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and UN certification: what each one covers
These are three different certifications that answer three different questions:
- ISO 9001: Does this manufacturer have a genuine, audited quality management system?
- ISO 14001: Do you manage your environmental impact in a controlled and verifiable manner?
- UN approval: Is this container certified for the transport of dangerous goods?
At Joaquín Alberto, we have all three. Not because it is a branding requirement, but because the sectors we serve demand them — and because they enable our clients to present them in turn to their own clients or sustainability committees.
What does ISO 9001 mean for you as a buyer of drums?
Working with a certified supplier reduces variability between orders. Fewer surprises on receipt, less time spent dealing with issues and greater certainty regarding delivery times. It also simplifies your own audits: when your client or your procurement committee asks about your suppliers’ standards, you have a documented and verifiable answer.
Certification does not replace other factors that you also value — personalisation, stock availability, response time — but it provides an objective foundation on which everything else is built.
